I was in the year above Alan at Worple Road Primary and Isleworth & Syon Secondary. He was Isleworth's answer to Diego Maradona, playing for the 4th year's team when he was a 1st year. With his blond locks, low centre of gravity and natural strength he was always a force to be reckoned with. He later played baseball for England for many years. My dad had been to Worple Road with his dad Arthur. A colourful character, Arthur had for a time been a matador in Spain. I last spoke to Alan 20 odd years ago. I was at a party in Chiswick, waiting for the Lennox fight (v Tyson?), and somehow we spoke on the phone for a while. His middle name was Winston as he was born on the day that Churchill died (24 Jan 1965). We were quite close at Worple Road, though I don't remember too much of him at IGS. I was always several steps behind him playing football, as was everybody else. Alan was a remarkable athlete, but he wasn't a good swimmer, proof that he was human after all. Losing him so young is all very sad. Memento mori - remember we are mortal.
